Conestoga

Conestoga trailers are a type of hybrid trailer. Conestoga trailers are a mix between a dry van and a flatbed. These trailers have a body frame that has sliding tarps for the sides. This allows for the trailer to be loaded from the sides or top like a flatbed but also gives the freight the protection of a dry van when the tarps are closed.

Conestoga trailers are often used for oversized loads that need extra protection from the elements during transport. These trailers are also used when there is special loading or unloading requirements or equipment needed to remove the freight from the truck.

Basic Information About Conestoga Trailers

Conestoga trailers come in either 48- or 53-foot lengths. The average trailer is 8.5 feet wide and can accommodate up to 45,000 pounds of freight. The standard height of the freight that can be placed in one of these trailers is 8 feet.

Conestoga trailers are fairly uncommon on the road. Many shipping companies do not want to invest in these types of trailers. Instead, they try to move that freight on a flatbed using tarps. Interstate One Trucking understands that tarping your product may not provide you with the amount of protection you need for your freight, so we have Conestoga trailers available for our clients.

Common Type OF Freight Moved on Conestoga Trailers

Conestoga trailers are most commonly used with the following types of freight:
- An oversized product that requires additional protection
- Specialty products that need to be moved with discretion
- Automobiles
- Machinery
- Freight from areas that had special loading needs

Do Conestoga Trailers Require Special Permitting?

No. Conestoga trailers operate the same way as a standard dry van trailer. Since they are the same size and have the same weight requirements as a dry van trailer, special permits are not required.

The only exception would be if the freight was a HazMat load. However, it is very rare for this type of trailer to be used with HazMat materials.

Can You Ship General Merchandise On A Conestoga Trailer?

Arguably you could ship regular palleted merchandise on a Conestoga trailer, But the question would be why would you want to do this? While the tarped sides and roof offer some protection for the merchandise, the tarping system is not totally weatherproof and does not provide the same overall security that a dry van provides to standard shipments.

Additionally, Conestoga trailers are considered specialty trailers which means that they transport at a higher rate than a dry van trailer. It would be more beneficial to the shipper to transport general merchandise in a dry van trailer instead of a Conestoga trailer.

Shipping With Interstate One Trucking Has Never Been Easier

Interstate One Trucking went into business with the intention of meeting the shipping and freight moving needs of a wide variety of clients. We did not want to restrict our business or drivers to any specific type of trailer or load. This is why we are one of the few trucking companies that have Conestoga trailers available at all times for our clients.

If you need to ship your freight using one of these specialty trailers, you are encouraged to contact Interstate One Trucking for your shipping needs. We know that we will be able to provide you with the most cost-effective shipping rate and time frame for moving your freight.

Interstate One Trucking is proud to be able to provide all of its clients nationwide access to the Conestoga trailers and other types of freight moving trailers.
